A recent global trend is the significant increase in the number of cross-border short-term business travellers, instead of traditional time-bound expatriate assignments. Historically, companies have seen long-term assignments / permanent moves as the main solution to address business needs. But in recent times, advancements in technology and communication, resource constraints across the region, focus on assignment cost management and the inherent difficulties associated with managing long-term assignees have led to a rapid increase in the number of short-term assignees and frequent business travellers. These short term business travellers can create a number of issues from a compliance and governance perspective for the employee and the employer, which need close and ongoing attention. The irony of this matter is that most companies are oblivious to the issues created and, for those who are aware of the issues, addressing them is extremely difficult from a practical perspective. In this webcast, our individual tax specialists from the PwC International Assignment Services (IAS) practice shared their insights on the common issues and risks to look out for and how best to address them.
